Start with the everyday size
Begin with the arrangement you use every day when choosing an extending dining table. Consider how many people sit comfortably at its closed size, where spare chairs will wait and how people move between the table and kitchen. Allow space around the extension
Draw the table in its open position as well. Check the space behind the chairs at each end and the relationship between supports and seated knees. If the extension approaches a doorway, console or fitted cabinet, resolve that relationship before ordering. Separate layouts for the closed and extended table communicate much more than its maximum length alone. Include the route used to bring additional chairs into the room.
Look closely at the joint
Grain direction, storage for the extra leaf and the level where surfaces meet belong in the design discussion.
